✦ The Science Behind the Sunnah · Miswak Miswak: The 1400-Year-Old Sunnah Modern Dentistry Is Still Catching Up To By The Sukoon Seeker · Sabr and Sukoon · 7 min read In Short: The Prophet ﷺ used miswak before every prayer, over a thousand years before modern dentistry existed. Today, dental research confirms what the Sunnah already knew — miswak contains natural antibacterial compounds that meaningfully reduce plaque and support oral health. This post explores the hadith on miswak, what the science actually shows, and how to use it properly. Long before toothbrushes, fluoride, or dental clinics existed, one small stick from the Salvadora persica tree was already part of a daily hygiene routine practiced by the Prophet ﷺ, over and over, before every single prayer. What's remarkable is not just that this practice existed — it's that fourteen centuries later, modern laboratories have gone back and studied it, and found there was real substance behind it...

Dua – The Weapon of a Believer

By The Sukoon Seeker · Sabr and Sukoon · August 2025 · 8 min read

Life is full of trials, losses, and unexpected turns. There are moments when you feel helpless — when every door seems closed and every effort feels exhausted. In those moments, a believer holds something no worldly power can match: Dua.

The Prophet ﷺ described dua not as a suggestion, but as a weapon — a tool of strength, protection, and connection with Allah سبحانه وتعالى. This post explores what that truly means for us today.

🌿 The Hadith — Foundation of This Post
الدُّعَاءُ سِلَاحُ الْمُؤْمِنِ، وَعِمَادُ الدِّينِ، وَنُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ
"Ad-Du'ā' silāḥ al-mu'min, wa 'imād ad-dīn, wa nūr as-samāwāti wal-arḍ"
"Dua is the weapon of the believer, the pillar of religion, and the light of the heavens and the earth."
— Narrated by Al-Hakim, attributed to the Prophet ﷺ

💫Dua — Beyond Material Weapons

A worldly weapon can protect the body. But what protects the heart? What guards your hope when fear overwhelms you? What shields your imaan when life feels unbearable?

That is where dua works. Unlike a sword or shield, dua operates on a dimension that nothing of this world can reach. It connects your broken, aching self directly to Allah — the All-Powerful, the All-Hearing, Al-Mujeeb (the One Who Responds).

When you raise your hands in dua, you are not weak. You are doing the most powerful thing a believer can do — acknowledging that true strength belongs to Allah alone, and asking Him to move mountains on your behalf.

وَقَالَ رَبُّكُمُ ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ
"And your Lord says: Call upon Me; I will respond to you."
Surah Ghafir (40:60)

Notice — Allah does not say "Call upon Me, and maybe I will respond." He says I will respond. This is a divine promise. Your dua is never lost, never ignored, never too small. Every word you whisper in the dark is heard by the Lord of all worlds.

🌸Benefits of Dua in Hardship

When life presses you from all sides, dua is your release valve — spiritually, emotionally, and psychologically.

🕊️

Peace in Distress

Dua replaces panic with stillness — you hand your burden to the One who can actually carry it.

💚

Stronger Bond with Allah

Every dua deepens your tawakkul — pulling your heart closer to its only true anchor.

🌅

Hope Over Hopelessness

Losing hope in Allah is itself a sin. Dua is the act of choosing hope — again and again.

A Path to Forgiveness

Dua made in humility opens the door of tawbah — and Allah loves to forgive.

🌙When Is Dua Most Accepted?

While Allah hears every dua at every moment, certain times carry extra weight — when the gates of acceptance are wide open:

  • 🌒
Last third of the night (Tahajjud) — Allah descends to the lowest heaven and asks: "Who is calling upon Me, that I may respond?"
  • 🙏
Between Adhan and Iqamah — A brief but precious window; dua is not rejected in this time.
  • 🌧️
When it is raining — A blessed time acknowledged in authentic prophetic tradition.
  • 🕋
After obligatory prayers — Your connection to Allah is freshest right after salah.
  • 💧
In the state of sajdah (prostration) — "The closest a servant is to his Lord is when he is in sajdah." (Sahih Muslim)

🌺5 Practical Tips for Effective Dua

Making dua is simple — but making dua with presence and intention transforms it into something profound.

  • 1
Begin with praise and salawat. Start by glorifying Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ — it opens the door of acceptance.
  • 2
Be in a state of wudhu. Physical purity creates inner readiness. Your body signals to your heart: this is sacred time.
  • 3
Ask with certainty, not doubt. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Do not say 'O Allah, forgive me if You wish' — say it with determination and conviction."
  • 4
Combine dua with sabr and shukr. Gratitude for what you already have amplifies the sincerity of what you ask for.
  • 5
Be consistent — never give up. The Prophet ﷺ said dua is answered in one of three ways: immediately, stored as reward for the Hereafter, or used to avert an equivalent harm. None is ever wasted.
🤲 A Dua to Begin With
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
— Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201) — the most complete dua in the Quran
FAQ

Common Questions About Dua

What if my dua is not being answered?
Allah answers every dua — but in His timing and in the way that is best for you. The Prophet ﷺ said dua is either answered directly, stored as a reward for the Hereafter, or used to avert an equivalent harm. Never consider your dua wasted.
Can I make dua in my own language?
Yes, absolutely. While the Prophet ﷺ taught us specific duas in Arabic, you may speak to Allah in any language you feel deeply in. The key is sincerity, not language. Allah understands every tongue.
Does dua change qadar (divine decree)?
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Nothing changes qadar except dua." (Ibn Majah) This means dua is itself woven into Allah's plan — making dua is part of how qadar unfolds for the believer.
What prevents dua from being accepted?
The Prophet ﷺ warned that consuming haram food or earning from haram sources can act as a barrier. Sincerity, halal livelihood, and avoiding major sins keep the path of dua open before Allah.
